When I was a kid, "Spic 'n Span" was a synonym for clean. I wonder what the origins of that phrase might be. And, if I recall correctly, there was a cleaner by the same name. Whatever happened to it? Feel free to share any information you might have with others. I was told that Soilex was a division of your company.. I had a question pertaining to Soilex and I was trying to find a mailing address or an E-mail address.... Thank you Posted by: Carol O'Neil on October 2, 2003 07:29 PM Why can't I find Spic n Span powder in my grocery store? Posted by: Jeannine on December 5, 2003 09:39 AM I am looking all over for the product called Soilex and can't find it anywhere. Could you tell me where I can purchase it. Thank you. Posted by: Barb Lueck on January 2, 2004 03:10 PM I too am looking for Spic N Span powder! What happened indeed. This is a wonderful product. Does anyone have an idea about how we can get this back in the grocery store? Thanks. Posted by: Marty Schoenberg on January 8, 2004 06:45 PM I thought I was the only person in the world that can't seem to find Spic n Span. It's the best to use on wood, especially when you are about to paint and in general a great all around cleaner! Can anyone shed some light on the mystery? Posted by: Joyce on January 26, 2004 06:21 PM Procter & Gamble sold Cinch and Spic N Span to a company named The Spic N Span Company. Their web site is www.spicnspan.com. which contains a store locator. Posted by: Joyce on January 28, 2004 02:43 PM I too am looking for Soilex as it is the best product to clean I have very found. Posted by: Jim on February 14, 2004 08:35 PM I've noticed many folks looking for soilex. I believe the problem is the spelling of the word. Try soilax--it is a soapless cleaner. Posted by: cheryl on March 9, 2004 01:51 PM Like those who posted notes above which you reprinted, I'm asking if one can still buy SpicNSpan liquid for cleaning? It's one of those great products that's been in the cabinet since I was a kid and never thought it would vanish. Why do you post all those notes asking the same question and not post the answer? Posted by: Ann Poole on March 16, 2004 06:48 PM Ann, Cheryl, etc, etc, etc... I'm just a guy with a blog. I posted a single lighthearted observation about the product. I don't really use it, though I'm sure its wonderful. I don't answer because, frankly, I know absolutely nothing about the topic. And I'm not posting notes here, you all are. :-) Perhaps, if one of you discovers what happened to the product you're seeking you could come back here and post the answer so that others could benefit from your experience. Just a thought. - Tim Posted by: Tim on March 17, 2004 12:21 AM I used to use it years ago and it's great. In the 60's and 70's there was a big environmentalist stink over the effects of phosphates in reclimation systems. As usual the tree hugging reactionaries ruined a good thing for the rest of us by getting phophates banned from many states stores. You can still get Pure TSP from most hardware stores, as it is used by painters and handymen to remove grease. Posted by: Kendra on February 10, 2005 08:19 AM Heh, too true, Kenda, too true. I have always been amazed at that: If I comment on a product, people post comments asking me why I make that product way I do, or expecting me to do something for them about that product. I don't mind the thread here -- seems there are a small community of people trying to solve a given problem, and this gives them a place to discuss it. The internet is amazing. Posted by: Tim (Random Observations) on February 10, 2005 11:55 AM As I am sure you are aware, there are lot of people on the web complaining about not being able to find TRULY original Spic 'N Span for sale anywhere, anyhow, or anytime! Having several science degrees I am full aware that the Original Spic 'N Span contained mainly trisodium phosphate (TSP) [not aryl or alkyl benzonyl sulfonates] and that's why it cleaned so well! Heck, years ago if you mixed up a strong enough solution you could strip varnish from wood floors. But, alas, the FEDS came down with more inane, and heavy-handed regulations to eliminate phosphates from waste and run-off waters because it caused the algae and aquatic flora to proliferate and increase the BOD in surface waters. So I'm just going to buy some TSP wholesale, mix it with a little Pine Sol (tm) and make it myself. Posted by: Alan B. on March 9, 2005 08:24 PM i suspect that is why p&g sold spic & span (not being able to have tsp as an ingredient). i purchased tsp from a chemical supply company. be careful not to buy so-called tsp without phosphates. according to a chemist i spoke to if it doesn't have phosphate it cannot be tsp. hopefully the new formula of spic n span works as well. Posted by: Jane Patnode on November 5, 2005 08:39 PM SPIC N SPAN WAS A GREAT FLOOR CLEANER; I PHONED THE COMPANY TODAY & WAS TOLD THAT THE PRODUCT NOW SOLD HAS A CHANGED FORMULA. I THINK THAT IT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO EVER GET THE OLD FORMULA, WHICH WAS SO GREAT; AND THE REASON IS SIMPLY THAT NOW THAT FORMULA IS ILLEGAL, AS IT PROBABLY CONTAINED PHOSPHATES ( TRANSLATE, "REAL CLEANER" ) WHICH HAVE BEEN BANNED AS BLAIMED FOR MAKING SEWAGE TOO STIMULATING ( FERTILZING ) FOR PLANTS, THUS CLOGGING UP BODIES OF WATER WITH PLANT GROWTH. HOWEVER, THERE IS A SNEAKY WAY TO GET AT THE OLD FORMULA, PROBABLY. PAINT STORES ( & DEPTS ) SELL TRI-SODIUM PHOSPHATE!!! JUST BUY YOU SOME GOOD 'OL TRISODIUM PHOSPHATE AND ADD IT TO YOUR DETERGENT OR SPIC AND SPAN TO PUT SOME UMPHT IN THE DETERGENT. IN DALLAS, THE ONLY PLACES LISTED BY THE COMPANY AS OUTLETS FOR SPIC AND SPAN ARE THE TOM THUMB GROCERIES, WHICH SEEM TO BE DYING FROM COMPETITION. HOWEVER, THE COMPANY'S WEB SITE GIVES A TOLL FREE NUMBER WHICH YOU CAN USE TO ORDER SPIC AND SPAN BY TELEPHONE, WHICH REQUIRES A SHIPPING CHARGE ( NOT SO BAD NOW SINCE GASOLINE IS SO EXPENSIVE ANYWAY ). Posted by: Joan on January 3, 2006 03:27 PM STOP - Spic and Span is NOT TSP. The the risk of being flamed, I will point out the error in assuming that Spic and Span is TSP. The MSDS sheet for the original powder lists the ingredients and there is no TSP in it. This is worth noting, because if you are like me and determined to find this product, or a close relative, the ingredients are important. I have recently recieved some large silver hierlooms that are badly tarnished. I want to clean them up in the friendliest manner possible. I've heard several people say that the best method they have ever used that will not remove silver is to line the bathtub with aluminum foil, pour in a box of Spic and Span, and dip the silver in. I don't want to kill my silver. TSP would very likely do just that. The key ingredients to Spic and Span are: Tri Sodium - yes. Phosphate - NO. THE WEB SITE HAS ALREADY BEEN POSTED ABOVE BY SOMEONE. Debbie Posted by: Debbie on July 14, 2006 01:16 PM You've got to be kidding me! I was looking online for Spic & Span info and stumbled across this blog. For nearly 3 entire years...this has gone on and on with the same question being asked and the same answers being given! The old formula Spic & Span is GONE...can't get it! There is new formula products including the original Cinch products. Instead of just continuing to post these same questions (clearly without reading the blog at ALL!), just go to the following site and order the stuff online!!! It's NOT that hard! http://www.teebop.com/cgi-bin/category/SPICANDSPAN&source=SNSWeb&kw=SNS I'm just amazed at how this has kept going when the answer was given in the 6th posting well over 2 years ago and it is the best and really only way to get information on the product! Since most of us now know that it can be purchased on line at: http://www.spicnspan.com/where-to-buy.htm I think that we should all bombard spicnspan's website with our emails to let them know how we all want this product and maybe they will try harder to get it distributed again in more areas. Posted by: Tim (Random Observations) on November 11, 2007 04:44 PM I recently found a box of Spic and Span at the local mom and pop hardware store; it seems to me to have the same fragrance it always had. The product code is/was 37000-31974, and it is/was distributed by Proctor & Gamble, Cincinnati, OH 45202. There is a phone number on the box for the label and MSDS sheet (for a list of the ingredients): 1-800-332-7787. See where to get the new-scented versions at: P.S. the ingredients listed on my box are: sodium carbonate; sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate; sodium sulfate; sodium silicate; water ; colorants; fragrance. I've been wondering about Spic n Span myself recently, got some floors to clean and I remember that always being what my grandma and mom used when I was growing up. I have been looking for it for a couple of years. My old box and new box look identical, with the product being distributed, by The Spic and Span Co. Irvington, NY 10533, with one exception: - the old 2003 box carries the name, The Spic and Span Company, as being the owner company, whereas, - the new 2005 box carries the name, a Prestige Brands Company, as being the owner company. Both boxes have the same web address for questions or comments: www.spicnspan.com. By the way, my new box from Ace was only $5.99. Next try will be Smart & Final as they have a large commercial cleaning section. Posted by: Betty Scott on April 13, 2010 09:33 PM I just found Spic and Span with Orange at the Dollar Tree. Maybe they also have it at DollarGeneral if you don't have the dollar tree, I'd look at other places like that. Try Big Lots too. Posted by: szafy metalowe on July 9, 2010 04:45 AM found spic n span at the dollar tree in my area...not the original scents...and not the same cleaning power at all.. the liquid is very thin and runny not as thick as the old version...sorry..not to be quirky..I was just disappointed...esp in the smell... :( Posted by: jill on July 15, 2010 09:01 PM Yes, it must be true. The old Spic and Span Pine scent must no longer be available. The newer product does not have the same smell nor cleaning strength as the old one. I have used the spray version and although it cleans there is not the lasting fresh smell of the product of years past. It's too bad. Posted by: mary on July 19, 2010 09:02 PM The formulas for our favorite cleaners were changed because they contained ingredients that were no longer allowed under new environmental rules. Soilax has now changed it's name -- can't remember what it is now, but if you search Soilax, you'll find the new product. I bought some when I first found out about the change, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I am sure it will not work as well. Soilax was a miracle product. I used to put venetion blinds in the bathtub with some Soilax and watch the dirt literally fall off. I barely has to touch it, hung them to dry, and done. I miss my Soilax. I'm sure there's some hidden in the storage room at some old hardware store somewhere, but how do you find those? Posted by: sharon on August 13, 2010 01:59 PM when I got married in 1979 I made spic and span the clan smell in my house three time a week I would put my music get on grubby closthes and my rubber gloves and spend the day making my house smell clean! I loved that smell there is nothing like that fresh smell I would have all my windows open spring, summer, fall, and winter the combination of the fresh air and spic and span would make me feel like my house was the freshest house on the street. Then i couldnt find it any more so I tried other products, to this day I cannot find another product that has come close to cleaning or that fresh smell I hope that one day they will bring it back so I can take a week and clean this old house into the fresh smelling home I remember!!! Ask and ye shall receive: The Word Detective (http://www.word-detective.com/030201.html#spicandspan) says it comes from an old (16th century) phrase, "spick and span new", which refered to every nail and piece of wood being new on a ship.
