With Libya and Syria replacing the US on the UN Human Rights Commission, Saddam's defiance of unanimously-approved "disarm or else, and this is final" resolution 1411 followed by no resolve to do anything whatsoever about it, and revelations that UN troops protecting Bosians permitted the worst massacre since World War II, what else could the UN do to further damage its credibility? How about have Iraq chair the council on disarmament? Yep, starting in May, Iraq will lead the UN committee in charge of ensuring disarmament. And (no kidding) Iran will co-chair the group! This is not a joke; I am not making this up either. Although I dearly wish I were. In the UN, all countries are equal, but some are more equal than others and get to sit on the Security Council. I suppose I should say governments, since the UN is really a collection of governments, whether they are representative of their countries or not. You have a typo - Iran is co-chair, not Iraq. I don't know which is more shocking, that Iraq could be both chair and co-chair, or that Iraq could be chair and Iran could be co-chair. Makes you wonder if North Korea is part of the committee. Posted by: Kevin Murphy on January 29, 2003 08:11 PM Kevin: LOL -- thanks for pointing out the typo. Odd world we're living in. I often think it would be nice if we had a body which allowed only democracies to join. But that misses a lot of the point of the UN, and besides, who could agree on the definition of "democracy"? We're technically a "republic". Hey, and Castro and Saddam were both recently 'elected' in landslide victories... :-) Posted by: tim on January 30, 2003 12:01 AM sad, sad, sad. Thanks for the heads up Tim. Posted about this yesterday in fact. Can you believe it? What a f***ing joke (scuse the foul language).
What's next? Saudi Arabia to chair a commission on Women's Rights?
