From Sexual Assault Statistics: Less than half of those arrested for rape are convicted, 54% of all rape prosecutions end in either dismissal or acquittal. The conviction rate for those arrested for murder is 69% and all other felons is 54%. 21% of convicted rapists are never sentenced to jail or prison time, and 24% receive time in local jail which means that they spend an average of less than 11 months behind bars. (The Response to Rape: Detours on the Road to Equal Justice) I agree that castration is the best form of punishment for rape. Also the lie-dectors test would also be another good choice to use. The flaw of that would have to be that anyone who has wires attached to their body will be scared and their heart will be faster, no matter what. In 1995 rapists were sentenced to 10 years in prison and now they are only sentenced to 11 months.11 months only makes the person think that they can do it again, and only have to stay in confinement for less than a year. One of my bestfriends was raped, and she has been put through alot of this, I feel if a man can ruin her life, then his life should be ruined in jail. But most judges don't agree with that, because they don't know if the girl or boy is telling the truth, but if a 5 or 6 year old boy or girl knows what sex is, then they probably know what's going on. Posted by: Ian Graves on December 5, 2003 01:52 PM Lie dector tests are benefical for all areas of crime with the usual standard court system- trail by jury, when required. It could regarded as a time and money saver, but not to be used soley for the purpose of proving a person guilty, as there as so many factors (emotional) that could cause the system to fail. Posted by: Sarah on March 24, 2004 04:04 AM if a man is convicted of sodomy with a 14 yr old, Posted by: George44 on June 17, 2004 02:45 AM All sex offenders should get more than jail time. They need to get help because they obviously don't think right. Posted by: Samantha on February 21, 2005 03:38 PM And what happens if it is difficult to change or control their sexual impulses? Posted by: Tim (Random Observations) on February 21, 2005 04:26 PM I think that it wrong that people who get convicted of tax evasion or forgery get more time in jail then rapist do. I belive that the government works that way because their more concerned with the people who mess with their personal life, the only reason that people who do tax evasion get more time is because that person is directly affecting the government's income Posted by: patience in oregon on February 23, 2005 04:03 PM that is riduculos!(spelled wrong)... i believe that rapists should spend more than 20 years in prison, even if the person raped a child or an adult. rape is rape and it is wrong. 11 months is absurd! Posted by: jessica on December 10, 2006 02:08 PM continued... Posted by: jessica on December 10, 2006 02:22 PM I think that if a rapist is put in jail, he is still thinking about sex. He is using up our tax money and he is living the good life; a life in which he isnt paying rent, food, etc. If he is sentenced to death, you are relieving him of all the worries in life. No more hurt, no repent. The best way to get to them is to cut off their private parts (dont want to be obscene)! That way, they can never commit the same crime. :) best solution ever. Posted by: Nancy 5 on March 14, 2007 11:34 AM THEY NEED MORE TIME IN JAIL. hmmmf. Posted by: christina and chezney in class on October 14, 2008 11:07 AM I know a 60yo guy who raped both of his daughters. He began raping the younger of the two kids when she was only 8yo and it is still going on and she just turned 18yo. She has layers of issues and problems and is now a hopeless drug addict with a death wish. Yes, these types of crimes should be punished with severity. Not a slap on the wrist, so that they can get out there and continue to rape and abuse. There have been numerous studies and the results are always the same: THERE IS NO REHABILITATION OR CURE FOR SEXUAL OFFENDERS!!! They always will reoffend period! What is wrong with the sentencing in this country. My god, you get many years for having a small amount of weed, the jails and prisons are full of addicts but not child molesters, rapists and abusers. Statistics state that 1 out of 4 women have been raped at some point in their lives! Sexual assualt on a young girl, boy or anyone, leaves everlasting scars, you just can't see them. I think they should get life in prison on the FIRST offence. It's evil and disgusting what these perverts are capable of. It's beyond my imagination that there aren't stiff sentencing guidelines and mandatory sentences in place at this point. It's always happenning, on the news all the time, just watch Nancy Grace, Jane Villez Mitchell or others and you would be shocked. I am looking into becoming proactive and want this legal system to recognize the seriousness and repeditiveness of these types of crimes. I'm enraged about the 2 girls that I mentioned in the beginning of this comment. They are clearly suffering terribly. Posted by: Kam on May 12, 2010 01:20 AM The problem with rape is that it is still difficult to prove in a court of law. Most cases are still tried with only circumstantial evidence, which is very unreliable. Many men who have been convicted sit in jail for a crime they did not commit. I would rather see a guilty man (or many guilty men) go free than see one innocent man behind bars. Clearly, there are a lot of hysterical and emotional people who believe in draconian punishment, similar to the justice carried out in Muslim countries. I agree 11 months is too short, but let's not compare rape to murder or other really serious offenses. Posted by: Shannon on July 21, 2010 01:32 PM i agree that 11 months is too short...but i disagree that people who rape always rape again...there has to be a statistic of the people who rape and then in jail/prison feel remorse and dont rape again. and i also beleive that they should have diffrent levels of sodomy...but im not going to get into that. Posted by: lindsay on August 4, 2010 10:32 PM r u effin kidding!! 11 months is nothing and they should get a whole lot more!!! for the person who made the comment "but let's not compare rape to murder or other really serious offenses" has to be insane and have no insight on how serious a rape crime is and how effects a person. people who go through such pain deal with this for years and i mean years of there life. rapist robbed victims of not just there body but sometimes the mind and soul they take something from them that can never be replace there sick animals who need to be STOPPED and if a man or anyone is cable of raping someone putting them through such pain such embarrassment and make them feel such shame and guilt for no reason at all you tell what that person is also capable. i tell you this i dont understand how u could make such a comment Posted by: jamie on December 4, 2010 02:53 AM 11 months? NO way! My daughter was raped last year and we all know he has done it before, but others are afraid to come forward, report to the POLICE. MOST women are .They do NOT want to go through what she just did for the past year and a half. It's very humiliating . You find out who your friends are , that's for sure. I personally believe a convicted RAPIST is just one step down from a murderer and should be imprisoned for at least 35 years. Or just cut is arms and STUFF OFF..let the VICTIM decide his punishment!!!! Or her (his ) parents!!!! They are sexual predators and will always be sexual predators. You know sometimes I think if there was DNA evidence to prove the offence, and especially if the victim was a small child, castration is a reasonable penalty. 11 months is apallingly short, especially when the rate of repeat offenses is so high.
