Consterned Clerics Bash Bishop, Assault African

English Anglican clergymen attempt to beat up a bishop; the bishop is rescued by passers-by:

A Kenyan Anglican Bishop was yesterday morning attacked in a London street by two Church of England colleagues for opposing the appointment of a homosexual bishop by the US Episcopal Church...

"I did not have any fear being in the United Kingdom because Anglican clergymen in this country have never indicated their support for this kind of behaviour," [Kenyan Anglican Bishop Oketch] said.

Oketch said he was going to the venue of the seminar when he alighted from a vehicle while dressed in his collar. The religious garb attracted the attention of the church leaders who were walking along the street.

He said when the English clergymen saw him, they asked him to stop and after greetings, inquired which country he was from.

"When I said I was from Kenya, they expressed anger and asked me to discuss an issue with them before I could continue with my journey," he said.

"One of them said they were saddened by the stand taken by the Anglican Church in Kenya and other countries over the appointment of the gay bishop.

"I told them we could not budge on the issue and that we will oppose it to the end because it is un-Christian," said Oketch.

He said his reply did not go down well with his colleagues who then grabbed him and threatened to beat him up before members of the public noticed the commotion and came to his rescue.

Jesus:

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. (Matthew 7:15-23)

Paul:

The [fruit] of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5:15-26)

Anglican Bishop Terry Brown, regarding acting out his passions and desires:

The Christian who condemns me [e,g. his same-sex sexual relations], I finally decide, is not working under Christian grace, charity and freedom but rather under some sort of "Christian law."

But where is this law? I see no law in Jesus Christ (except the law of love). I see no law in St. Paul. I see specific condemnations of specific relationships in St. Paul but the specific relationships are very unlike anything I experience... I do not pay much attention to those who would totally condemn me. From every Gospel story I know, Jesus did not come for condemnation but for love... In the end, St. Paul (especially the mature St. Paul) is more about the radical freedom that Christ gives than imposing "Christian law."

So I must say that the 1998 Lambeth Conference resolution on homosexuality is simply wrong. I must say that the position of the Church of England in Issues in Human Sexuality is simply wrong. I must say that the Canadian house of bishops’ 1997 guidelines on human sexuality are simply wrong.

Peter:

So then [in light of God's coming judgement], make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction... be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position.

Anglican Bishop John Shelby Spong:

Theism, as a way of defining God, is dead... it becomes nonsensical to seek to understand Jesus as the incarnation of the theistic deity... the Christology of the ages is bankrupt. The view of the cross as the sacrifice for the sins of the world is a barbarian idea based on primitive concepts of God and must be dismissed... There is no external, objective, revealed standard writ in scripture or on tablets of stone that will govern our ethical behavior.

Jude:

For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord... In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire. In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies... these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand... these men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm -- shepherds who feed only themselves. (Jude 1:3-13, excerpted)

So, dear reader, that's what all the fuss is about.

I'm not Anglican, but I thought the juxaposition of the previous quotes would put the character of the conflict into perspective, against the other view, already well covered in the media.
