We think of Michael Moore, defender of smalltown America, as the opponent of huge, faceless business which put the "little guy" out of business. Or at least we understand that to be the image he pretends to convey in his films. So it might follow, then, that he'd be in favor of small businesses, the Mom 'n Pop video rental places, hardware stores, book sellers, and hair salons which dot small town America who are withering from competition from giant chain stores like Wal-Mart, Borders, and Home Depot. Right? You would be wrong if you got that impression. Let's listen to Mikey's view of this subject: You know in my town the small businesses that everyone wanted to protect? They were the people that supported all the right-wing groups. They were the Republicans in town, they were in Kiwanis, the Chamber of Commerce—people that kept the town all white. The small hardware salesman, the small clothing store sales persons, Jesse the Barber who signed his name three different times on three different petitions to recall me from the school board. F*** all these small businesses — f*** ’em all. Bring in the chains. Big business? Bad. Small business? Bad. Only business owners are racist, and all racists are business owners. And they all support Republicans. Everyone stay home and grow vegetables in your yard. Mike's a man who knows all the problems and none of the answers. Thanks to Kay Hymowitz at City Journal.
