At one [Al-Anon] meeting, we had to share something about a higher power. And I said that as a Jew, it was hard for me to think in terms of a loving God who would let the Holocaust happen. And I thought that was kind of meaningful. And right after that this guy says, "Well, I think the higher power put an apartment into my life to give me the courage to leave my lover." So I'm thinking, What an idiot. But then a few weeks later the same guy said something that was so helpful to me. And I remember thinking: Oh, my God. You can learn stuff from people who are stupid! It was really a revelation to me. So that's the essence of Stuart [Smalley].
