Previously, when discussion abortion, I've always used the terms "pro-life" and "pro-choice" -- being fair, I figured, by given each crowd the label it wanted. This comment by Keith Burgess-Jackson, however, raises an excellent counterargument:
Indeed. So perhaps my labels should be "pro-abortion" and "anti-abortion". After all, some of the "pro-life" crowd approve of taking life in a number of circumstances (such as war or capital punishment), so we can't similarly say each of them are always motivated by a desire to save human life no matter what. A good rejoinder to my last comment might be to argue that principled support for both war and capital punishment are rooted in the desire to ultimately save the maximum number of lives possible. Possibly, but it isn't clear that each and every "pro-life" person who supports war and/or capital punishment does so for the express reason of increasing total human life expectancy. But it is clear each "pro-life" person opposes abortion. Add your two cents...

I agree with your take. I've never liked either of the labels. I would fall in the Pro-Life camp, but was never comfortable with the label since I was (and am) for capital punishment.
Plus I've never been in favor of letting the spin doctors define themselves. You can usually bet it's not accurate. So Anti-abortion and Pro-abortion it should be. It's not like either side can complain that those labels are inaccurate.
