Useless Citizens of Heaven

Garrison Keillor:

I am now the chairman of a national campaign to pass a constitutional amendment to take the right to vote away from born-again Christians. [enthusiastic audience applause] Just a little project of mine. My feeling is that born-again people are citizens of heaven, that is where there citizenship is, [laughter] is in heaven, it's not here among us in America.

Discoshaman, commenting on who has turned out to help try to reclaim the Ukraine for democracy and freedom:

Churches are high-profile here. You see a lot of men in clerical garb (presumably Greek-Catholic.) Evangelicals are present all out of proportion to their population size -- Jesus fish adorn several of the tents, and I've met a ton of them in the tent city and elsewhere.

Jesus, on his followers' intended role in and interaction with society:

"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Christians never do any of their share in society. Other than setting up hospitals, creating public schools, ending the slave trade, marching for civil rights, leading the anti-Soviet uprisings in Poland and other places, caring for and feeding the orphaned, starving, lepers and AIDs patients, working to save lives and end tragedy in Darfur, end prison rape, and donating a rather sizeable chunk of their lower- and middle-class incomes to charity beyond what they already cough up in taxes, it's not clear why they would be fit to be given the full rights of citizenship.

Garrison, on the other hand, receives handsome compensation for advising self-labelled "porn widows" to support and actively join in their husband's addictions and writing skits about ketchup.

I can see how fighting totalitarianism, and caring for AIDs patients, lepers, and prisoners pales in comparison.
