Liberalism and the Bible

The philosophy of liberalism, by which I mean claiming to always be "for the little guy" or underdog, is utterly incompatible with that of the bible.

When explaining how the Jews should administer social justice in the society God created for them, God carefully warned against against favoritism -- both towards the rich and towards the poor:

"'Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.'" (Levitcus 19:15)

We are not supposed to be partial to rich people. But it is just as great a sin ot be partial to poor people. In fact, such "social justice" is referred to as a perversion of justice.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I cannot see how our current system of disproportionate tax refunds -- giving more back to the poor than we give back to the rich -- is anything but a clear violation of this concept.

If you and I went to a restaurant and shared the bill, and you agreed to pay 90% and I agreed to pay 10%, and there was a rebate of ten dollars -- wouldn't it then be fair to give you back $9 and me $1? So how does this equation change if we claim you or I "deserve" a different standard because we're rich? It shouldn't.

And, while we're on the topic, regarding Bush (or even Clinton) hatred, the next verses say:

"'Do not go about spreading slander among your people' ...

'Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt.'" (Leviticus 19:16a,17)

There's nothing wrong with publicly criticising the Bush (or Clinton) administration based in some charge in which you have good evidence. But it is wrong to spread unfounded slanders. And it is wrong, however much you disagree with some action they've taken, to harbor hatred in your heart for someone. I don't see any exception here for politicians, do you?

If you're having trouble with this idea, you might consider asking whether you're treating that person the way you would like to be treated by others. For example, do you call him "shrub" or "chimp" during a conservation? (How would you feel if many people called you an "ass" or "bitch" behind your back?)

Further, those who hold this book in high regard (Christians and Jews) have an active obligation to oppose Bush (and Clinton) hatred. If we fail to do so, we in some way participate in it and share guilt for it.

Hmmm... I think I've got a letter to write soon.
