Divorce: "NOTHING is more important to me than you."

I'm not a fan of South Park. It's the obscenity, really.

But I happened upon the following fragment, excerpted from the book South Park Conservatives which is too good to keep hidden.

This one goes out to all my friends who are going through this tragedy involuntarily. And I'm sorry if others are offended, but it needs to be said.

South Park even exhibits a socially conservative streak from time to time. In one deftly crafted episode, Stan’s parents Randy and Sharon decide to get divorced. Randy swings by in his fancy new red sports car to pick up his devastated son, and tries to explain.

Stan’s father: Your mother and I still care about you and your sister, but we just don’t like being around each other anymore.

Stan: Well ... I don’t like being around my sister anymore. Does that mean I can leave her too?

Stan’s father: Well, no, because you’re family. You can’t just leave family. You have to stick with family no matter what.

Stan: But you and mom are family. How come you can just split up?

Randy is momentarily taken aback, and Stan pounces: “You know what I think? I think that when you and mom got married you became family. And now that you are, you shouldn’t be able to leave her any more than I can leave my sister.” Randy, panicked, drops Stan back off at home. “You know that nothing is more important to me than you, right, Stan?” he says platitudinously, and peels off.

A little later, Stan quarrels with his mother’s aggravating new boyfriend, Roy. Sharon seeks to reassure her distressed boy. “Stanley, you know you’re the most important thing to me, right?” she says, echoing Randy. “If that’s true,” Stan replies, “then get back together with dad for me.” Mom answers coldly: “Now, Stanley, you have to understand how divorce works. When I say you’re the most important thing to me, what I mean is: You’re the most important thing after me and my happiness and my new romances.”

Amen.
