Durbin: An Apology from Nowhere?

Like LaShawn, I had noticed this too -- yet another story (like the Swiftboat Vets) where the media covers the aftereffects, but steadfastly ignored the story itself...
No major television network news show reported his initial remarks. No national newspaper saw them as newsworthy. So, where did this outrage come from, given that the media ignored his remarks? How did millions of Americans come to know Durbin as “Turban Durbin” if the mainstream media looked the other way? You’re looking at it right now: the Internet.
Such strange days with the media. They cover an apology for remarks they never reported. A reader, unaware of the Internet would wonder: "He's apologizing? For what? There's a backlash? From who?"
When a conservative does something stupid (or even which can be spun as stupid, when taken out of context), it's news. When a liberal does something similar -- well, it's not news until the apology is issued. As with Kerry and the Swiftboat Veterans, the media seems to want to wait to see how the candidate or politician handles it -- apparently to make sure they don't paint them into a corner prematurely, and make sure everybody keeps their story straight.

These are just the examples of the hundreds of hard news stories from the MSM that I could find with a quick search of Google News. If you look for yourself you will see hundreds of editorials from columnists of all of these newspapers and other sources, all liberals blasting Karl Rove for his insulting yet factual statements from a couple of days ago. Editorials from the same people who were no doubt defending Senator Durbin's traitorous comments on the Senate floor last week.
I'm sure you are familiar with the curious politics in Illinois. Governor Blagojevitch, a democrat, was elected during the last gubernatorial election using "change the system" and "play fair" and "no favoritism" as key themes. The previous governor, George Ryan, a Republican, has been generally accepted as being corrupt since before he left office. Blagojevitch ran at a good time to be an "outsider" Democrat. This really wasn't true, considering his father-in-law is as connected and "old school" (read: corrupt) as they come. For quite a while now articles have been coming out about how Illinois has been "fairly and impartially" and "for the good of the state" sending business to key contributors of Blagojevitch. Would there be fewer articles than with a Republican? Written differently? Would the overall and individual stories (love that term!) be covered differently? At the outset? When denials/apologies arrive? Articles both in number and content? Traction from pickups across the various media locally/nationally? Dunno. Food for thought.
