(Not directed at Steve, personally...) I don't blog about most of what I talk about with friends. I don't blog about what I pray about, and the London victims and their families were definitely topic #1 for a while. I don't blog about things that have already been adequately covered unless I either have something original to add, or feel I just have to write something about it. Let's be serious: It's a terrible tragedy. If it were one of my friends, or a relative, my world would be turned upside-down in a moment. And I would hate to experience such a thing firsthand -- to lose an eye, and/or an arm, or most my face. The pictures of the victims make me squirm, and my heart goes out to the survivors and the survived-bys. Forty or so innocent lives were tragically snuffed out. Forty personalities of nearly infinite value to those who loved them. Forty stories ended in the middle of a mundane commute. Yet just hours before, one hundred innocent victims were slaughtered in Darfur. Why don't we pledge to do anything in our power to help them, as we did with the UK? Where is their press? If it's odd that we go on as usual after London, then what of the slow-motion genocide which is Darfur? Are African lives worth less than British ones? Hey, we got to invent a portable appliance to detect portable bombs, so that everyone can buy one and carry it at all time. I don't think that a suicide bomber would dare to carry a bomb in a bag as fearfree as he or she does it now. Posted by: Ana on July 21, 2005 11:57 AM suicide bomber would dare to carry a bomb in a bag as fearfree as he or she does it now. A bomber who is going to kill him will be afraid? And wouldn't "dare". Interesting. (I don't condone killing of innocent ppl in any way) How is "suicide bomber" more "bad" than air bombing? Which British also did to many places? America also got its freedom from England right? Bombing have killed many innocent people. Suicide bombing killed many people. Not as many as say air bombing or carpet-bombing. Are they more "evil". Posted by: Imran on July 21, 2005 03:27 PM Genocide is the ultimate crime against humanity. And a government-backed genocide is unfolding in the Darfur region of the Sudan. As the horror in Darfur continues, our major television news networks are largely missing in action. During June 2005, CNN, FOXNews, NBC/MSNBC, ABC, and CBS ran 50 times as many stories about Michael Jackson and 12 times as many stories about Tom Cruise as they did about the genocide in Darfur. Genocide in Darfur is happening right before our eyes. Ask our networks why we can't see it. Posted by: Be A Witness on July 22, 2005 10:02 AM Add your two cents...

Sadly, the answer is yes, they are. There is no major media in Darfur, no 24 hour news networks in Somalia, no major newspapers that willing to report on things the government doesn't want them too. The absense of the press in Darfur may not be the sole reason that we concentrate so little on the genocide there, but it I believe that its a large enough reason to really illustrate the vital importance of a free press in combating potentially totalitarian governments. I don't think enough people realise, or are taught, how important a free press really is when it comes to preserving our liberties.
