One Man's Terrorist...

This kind of language, common in the press lately, shows gross hypocrisy:

Madrid was put on high alert following the London bombings. There were fears here that terrorists might strike again.

Terrorists? Terrorists? What terrorists? I though we were told such people were "millitants" or even "insurgents." Suddenly, they're terorrists again!

That is so amazingly condescending. As long as people far away are being blown up -- eh, they're foreigners -- we need to minimize the emotional words which might make us identify with the victims, and become angry at people who commit such acts. Screw those victims and their families. Our sympathies are with the 'millitants.' ("Militant", as if each terrorist were the same as a soldier, one who follows rules, and tries to make efforts to spare innocent casualties.)

But blow up a few Londoners or New Yorkers and watch how quickly those New York Times, Guardian, or BBC reporters suddenly start deciding it's "terrorism" again.

Update: After I wrote the above, I discovered Hitchens had said the same thing, albeit a bit more succinctly, as usual:

FOR a few moments yesterday, Londoners received a taste of what life is like for the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, whose Muslim faith does not protect them from slaughter at the hands of those who think they are not Muslim enough, or are the wrong Muslim.

And for a few moments, those acts became "terrorism".

Sorta leftist? These days, I have no idea what leftism is supposed to be in theory (if you find out, let me know), but if recent examples give any kind of guidance, what I've written above is, sadly, anything but leftist. Why do you think Hitchens defected?

If leftists were about these sorts of things, we'd find them, not conservative Christians, being the ones making noises about the people starving in North Korea. Where is their concern about Darfur? Why were Christians the main people supporting the Ukrainian grass-roots Orange Revolution against Putin's fascist tendancies while EU journalists spun it as an evil plot created by George Bush?

Good heavens, if what I wrote were "leftist" I wouldn't have to write it at all: the BBC, etc, would not have been waiting until the bombs blew up in their backyard to learn to use the word "terrorist" again. I ask it again: were the people in Bali or Indonesia worth less than an Englishman (or American)? No? Then why use the word "militant" when they're killed?

Why do you think I'm for free trade among democracies? Because I believe it makes lives better -- and not just mine. Why do you think I have trouble taking the left's arguments about outsourcing seriously? Because it comes down to: "Oh, those foreigners might find gainful employment at my expense!" What's my argument for being in Iraq? The Iraqis benefitted and want us to remain there a little longer. Why am I opposed to farm subsidies? Many reasons, but not least being that it's killing the third world.

Look, you may not agree with me, but you should really get a clue as to what my motivations are.

As far as I can see, the only salient difference between many conservatives and liberals is that today's conservatives are simply former liberals who were willing to change their minds once they realized they were wrong about what policies worked or helped people.
