I see peaceful Buddhists are at it Sri Lanka:
Why should people be allowed to decide what to think for themselves? You know, they are poor, and that inherantly makes them stupid, so their leaders -- who are all smart and honest -- must tell them what they are allowed to think and believe. How dare they have their own individual convictions? We need to put such people, or those who persuaded them, into jail! Imagine the outcry if some in the US suggested Christians were attempting to pass a bill saying that if you were born a Christian, you couldn't change your religion to atheism, Buddhism, Hinduism, or Islam. And I can't think of one even semi-Christian nation, anywhere in the world, in the last several centuries, where it is or was illegal to change your religion. Yet all around the world, governments which are atheistic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim have made it illegal for people to alter their own philosphical convictions. Yet in the US, in many circles, these religions/worldviews are viewed as "cool" and "progressive". And it seems that kind of "progress" is now coming here too:
