Closing the Book of Daniel

Via World Mag Blog, it seems NBC has pulled the plug on the Book of Daniel: dismal ratings, as expected. As usual, it's the meta-discussion I find interesting. Interesting comments on NBC's discussion board include...

One thing I've learned from the interaction here at this forum is that activism against the religious right is mandatory...

Yes, that will certainly help convince them (a) nobody's out to persecute them, and (b) that they should not be allowed to disagree or protest anything. So, um, if gays, women, or Muslims had complained about a negative depiction, would you decide it was necessary to engage in activism against them?

Because of you, I have realized how dangerous these right-wing groups are, and as a result, I am going to join in the fight to tell them to shut the hell up.

Egads -- protesting (or worse, not watching!) an NBC show? "Dangerous" indeed! Let's DO revoke their first amendment rights. That'll teach em!

People don't want their lives mirrored, I fear.

Obviously, there was tremendous outrage from drug-using Episcopalian Priests with gay children. Not a demographic you want to mess with, I tell ya.

I really do wish you luck with future projects.... Maybe this board will have shown you that not all christians are hateful, we just ask for some respect for our Savior...

... but, unlike a certain other religion, you won't threaten death to anyone who doesn't toe the line. Which makes you a better target.

I can't begin to tell you how sad this makes me! I loved the show. It made me laugh. It made me cry. I enjoyed every moment of it.

I guess there's one in every crowd.

If this is true, it is a shame! I can't believe how the Christian Republican Extremists are promoting censorship! This goes against the Constitution, and what America stands for.

This kind of idiocy truly scares me: the guy thinks the Constitution prohibits people from complaining about television shows they don't like. Or perhaps compels them to keep the ratings up.

It was a good show, well written and nicely done. but there have always been fascists in the US...

Not liking "Book of Daniel" = Fascism.

What gives the Right the right to turn the left away? And what gives them the right to cancel a thought provoking left Television show?

Another scary one: Actually NBC cancelled the show. And definitely, "the Right" should have no ability at all to refuse to consume anything the left does.

Do these people not understand freedom of thought or conscience?

Jack, You're show is brilliant!!! -- the best that has been offered on network tv for a long while. It is filled with the unconditional love a man has for his family, his church, his community...

... his illicit recreational drug of choice ...

I'm proud of the hundreds of thousands of people who stood with me in bringing this show to its end. Defaming Christ has consequences, more than just the short-term financial but for eternity. Thank you for removing this discriminatory program from the air.

Oh yeah, that will win them over. Too bad so many Christians have a "step out of line and you're going to hell" message. We all step out of line. The problem isn't so much in defaming Christ -- another sin like so many others -- but rather in rejecting the source of forgiveness.

From what I heard of the creator, he sounded like he was trying to depict a Jesus he would personally like -- his idea of a "best friend", I think he put it. The problem is, I think, that he just wasn't familliar with the Jesus most people encounter when they read the bible. The one who doesn't say things like "She's a good girl", but rather: "No one is good except God."

NBC is falling way behind in the ratings and they go and pull an absolutely fabulous show from their schedule??? What on earth are the powers that be thinking??

Um, the "powers that be" were thinking that it got bad ratings. It's really just that simple. "Desparate Housewives" is also deeply against Christian values. But it gets good ratings, ergo, it stays on the air.
