I am getting sooo tired of hearing everyone repeat the myth of the Children's Crusade. Especially the version where they sell the children to pirates. As best as we can tell, no such thing ever happened, and the sources from which we derive the story were, uh, highly questionable. Resources:
It's odd, Varenius: plant an allegedly historical idea in a book of fiction and people will soak it up like a sponge, and defend it as though it were their own grandmother. Bad as it was, though, a more balanced perspective shows that much about it has been overlooked. (And I say that, as you'll see, as someone whose family knew children who were killed in that raid.) I suspect Kurt Vonnegut's (totally overrated) Slaughterhouse Five has had much to do with cementing the "Children's Crusade" in people's minds.
