Getting Tough on Illegal Immigration

With the some in the US Border patrol apparently working with Mexico [more] to keep illegal immigrants from being caught, and plans from both sides of the aisle to make sure lawbreaking is rewarded with citizenship, when, one might wonder, will our government start getting tough on illegal immigration from Mexico?

Answer: When the immigrants claim to be Christians fleeing Muslim persecution:

The three Iraqi nationals, one of them wearing a protective breathing mask as a tuberculosis precaution, had little to say at their sentencing, but Piuz asked Recio to “Please take care of us.”

Recio told the three men that their story did not add up for him and sentenced each of them to the maximum allowed under federal law.

The magistrate judge told the men he gave them the stiff sentence because of the ongoing war in Iraq and that he wanted to send a message to any would-be immigrants that they need to use to the proper channels to seek asylum.

Well, um, yes. But why only in this case? Are Mexicans better human beings than any other people on the planet? Are they more worthy of US citizenship than, say, a French woman who wants to come to the US to start a business? Is their situation more desparate than that of persecuted Christians in Sudan, Zimbabwe, or Iraq?

I'm not protesting the sentence. I'm protesting the double standard. I understand the need to be cautious about possible terrorists or other kinds of criminals. But isn't it also possible some criminals might actually come from Mexico?

By the way, the men have family members who have been US citizens for over twenty years.
