The other day, I was listening to reports that terrorists had killed dozens in Nigeria. Only problem was that they weren't "terrorists", they were "millitants." Militants? Are they engaged in warfare? Do they wear uniforms and attempt to avoid civilian casualties? Gosh, I wonder: what does motivate these people? What do they stand for? Are they all members of some common group? If so, which one? Was there a goal in killing all those people? Of course, we all know: It's not the Mormons, nor Elks' Club, nor even the KKK. It's not the US Army Reserve or even the French Foreign Legion. No, it's yet another case of Islamic terrorism. And they think if they just don't tell us this, we won't find this out? (A) Since when did the press think we were so stupid? (B) Since when were the motivations of the killers not be a newsworthy aspect of a mass murder? Andrew McCarthy pegs it in "The Elephant in the Room". I'm a Nigerian, and I don't recall us having any terrorists, at least none like the Middle Eastern ones. What exactly were the killings about? If it was in the Niger delta region, it was probably people fighting for non-religious reasons, e.g., for control of crude oil producing regions. (We're the 5th or 7th - I forget which - largest producer of petroleum.) Very very few of the people from that area are Muslims. And some people *are* referred to as militants (despite the fact that they don't wear uniforms) because they are fighting against exploitation by large oil companies. People incorrectly assume that Nigeria is a Muslim country, but we are actually split about 50-50 Muslim-Christian. We've had religious violence, mostly instigated by Muslims (I'm a Christian, so maybe I'm biased, but I doubt it), but nothing that would be objectively considered terrorism by most. So I really would like to know what the story was about. A link would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps I can shed some light on the issue. (Or maybe not.) Forgive my ineloquent post. It's late and I'm tired. :) Posted by: rara on February 5, 2008 10:35 PM Add your two cents...
