If I wanted to know how to initiate nuclear fusion, or how much energy a given reaction will release, I would certainly consult an atomic scientist. But if I wanted to know how likely it was that some politician or terrorist, somewhere in the world, would choose to detonate an atomic weapon, a man who has spent his life in the lab thinking about atomic physics would be among the very last people I would ask. Deb: I've spent about six years in academia. And I've noticed that some of the most socially inept people I've ever known were also some of the most brilliant in the hard sciences. They could solve equations. They just couldn't figure out what to do with another human being, or how to read them. Not always; but frighteningly often. So I tend to think most people, including even politicians, are much wiser about the world, on average. Look at Albert Einstein. Brilliant mathematician. But he also bought Marxism hook, line, and sinker: Someday, he believed, we'd be magically transformed into selfless beings. Very smart. And very unwise.
