Hitchens, writing about the first Gulf War:
I vividly remember saying to the late Peter Jennings, as we journeyed toward the Gulf on the eve of hostilities, that the measure of success would now be, not the recovery of Kuwait, but the replacement of the Ba'athist order. And I shall never forget his response, which was, journalist to journalist: "That's only true if we say so."
More on Jennings here and here.
