All across America, beekeepers have noticed that their bees have just gone missing. It's been a huge mystery, and a huge problem, as all kinds of plants -- agricultural and otherwise -- need bees for pollination.
The USDA is trying to coordinate research into this bizarre and troubling phenomenon. I'm not a fan of large government, but it seems to me this is an example of when government can provide a useful function by polling and coordinating resources. Thankfully also leaving the quackery like cell-phone radiation behind. I was trying really hard, when I wrote that, not to make any snide remarks about linking the collapse with global warming. And with some success. The last USDA sponsored meeting seems to have narrowed down the causes quite a bit. Thankfully also leaving the quackery like cell-phone radiation behind.
(If I'm admitting a government success, you know they did something right.)
