I'd forgotten about this:

Take Gov. Mike Huckabee of the Razorback State. When tax-lovers bashed him for refusing to jack up taxes to cover budget shortfalls, he created a public “Tax Me More Fund.” That way people who get piggish about raising taxes can prove it with a voluntary donation.

So, um, how'd that work out?

In Arkansas, the “Tax Me More Fund” raised less than $2,000 dollars during its four months of existence, leading policymakers to believe that most Arkansas residents felt they were sending enough of their hard-earned money to the state capitol already. [1]

This does tend to lend credence to the suggestion that those who advocate higher taxes generally imagine they're doing so at someone else's expense.
