At least one person I discussed this with suggests that the answers were more a matter of viciousness than stupidity, that the French tend to do that if you ask the audience an easy question.

I'm not sure what to believe.

Wouldn't that imply that the French are only 52% vicious? Are the two percent who voted for Mars really vicious? :D
