First we learn that underground magma is probably what's melting the Greenland glaciers, now we learn volcanoes may be melting Antarctic ice.

I demand that we put more research money into discovering how CO2 emissions from SUVs are increasing magma flow!

(And causing global warming on Pluto!)

Well, Tim, why do you need me? We are busy trying to figure out how climate change justifies wealth redistribution. Just make something up, I mean, these people will believe anything. How about the global warming caused by CO2 is causing magmatic pressure to increase – it's a natural extension of Charles' law. Is that good enough for you?

Mr. Vice President,

I think you missed the critical *fact* demonstrating that CO2 gases are indeed linked to magmatic flow: our top soil erosion problem! This erosion of course is due to increased UV radiation, which of course is a result of our Ozone being depleted by that nasty R12 freon and other CFCs that man has dumped into our atmosphere. We need to STOP erosion NOW - man kind cannot afford another Grand Canyon! /sarcasm off/

According to the Mohr-Coulomb Theory of rock failure, large glacial loads generally suppress earthquakes, but rapid deglaciation promotes earthquakes. According to Wu & Hasagawa (1996), the rebound stress that is available to trigger earthquakes today is of the order of 1 MPa. This stress level is not large enough to rupture intact rocks but is large enough to reactive pre-existing faults that are close to failure.
