Rick Warren: Closet Republican?

Oh, this is just too funny:

"Nightline" co-anchor Cynthia McFadden interviewed Pastor Rick Warren on Monday about the presidential forum he held with Senators Barack Obama and John McCain and pestered him to just admit that he's a Republican. At one point, she goaded, "You know, there are some people who feel that this is kind of a sham operation. That really, we know you, as an evangelical, are a Republican, a John McCain supporter."

Gee -- I wasn't aware it was wrong for the people who host or ask questions at a debate to have their own private political convictions. Does that then make the entire debate itself illegitimate, somehow? A "sham operation", as McFadden implies?

And if so, when what are make of the 2004 debates, hosted by Jim Lehrer, Gwen Ifill (both of PBS), Charlie Gibson, Bob Schieffer (CBS News)? Last I recall, every single one of those moderators leaned left -- a few even had their salaries paid by the government.

Nightline's hypocrisy here is breathtaking.

(I know, I know: No amount of leftism disqualifies one -- but even the tiniest suspicion of harboring private conservative beliefs is a clear sign of insurmountable conflict of interest. It's not just the media: the last church I attended, I had a TWO friends who left in anger because they suspected the pastor secretly supported Republicans! -- though he never once said anything political.)

Apparently, although in my oblivious nature, so this is a second hand story about my own life...

LOL.

Apparently the looks I was given were pretty bad, and as said friend related to me...

I'm reminded of stories I've heard about conservatives trying to date people in places like LA and NYC (forgot the source). The story usually ends up with some hilarious phobic reaction to non-orthodox ideas. Horror! (Interesting stories, from the female POV, here and here.)

Tangent: Recently, a friend mentioned, in passing, some singles ad in which a woman mentioned that she preferred an "open minded" man. Ironically (unless one is referring to intimate acts) that's usually a code phrase which means one wants to date people who hold orthodox liberal positions. Ironic because most conservatives I know have changed their mind VASTLY, on huge issues; in contrast, most my liberal friends seem to hold the positions they've seemingly always held. (Not always: a few people I know have abandoned pro-life beliefs, etc. But by in large...)

So I've made a mental note, next time someone talks about being "open-minded", to ask them what major political issue they've completely changed their mind about. If I were still dating, it'd be interesting to do an informal survey in that regard. I mean that sincerely: How many of the people saying they're looking for someone "open minded" would be open to changing their minds on deeply-held political beliefs?
