Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) helps dramatically reduce arterial calcification, implying it could help tremendously in preventing heart attacks. link Given the recent love affair with "vitamin D" (Cholecalciferol) it's interesting to note that higher levels of calcitriol (formed from vitamin D) are associated with arterial calcification under certain conditions. The claim made by some researchers that heart disease is caused by vit. D deficiency seems backwards. Low calcidiol seems to sometimes be the result of increased production of calcitriol. Calcidiol, also known as 25D, is formed directly from "vitamin D." Calcidiol is what doctors test for to determine "Vitamin D deficiency." Calcidiol is used by the body to produce 1,25D aka calcitriol, which is the active hormone. In such cases, vitamin D supplementation could exacerbate heart disease. (In a potential heart attack victim, inflammation -> increased TLR-4 -> increased CYP271B -> increased conversion of calcidiol to calcitriol) Further, many blood thinners (salycilates in particular, such as aspirin, warfarin, or tumeric) which thin blood by interfering with Vitamin K1 seem to have the long term effect of increasing arterial calcification and heart disease, in direct contradiction to what we've been told. Interesting! I don't recall thinking about Vitamin K2 in years (I suspect they mentioned in briefly in high school, and I've long since forgotten about it.) I don't recall thinking about Vitamin K2 in years Most people only know about it (Vitamin K) as it relates to blood clotting, which is how it got it's name. "koagulation" in German or something like that. The understanding of its effects outside of that are very recent. Incidentally, Japanese natto (produced by B. Subtillis Natto bacteria which it is cultured with. K2 tends to come from bacteria one way or another.) is known for having a particularly large amount of K2 and there are folks in Japan who seem to consume it fairly regularly. Facebook and social networking. FAD or new way to expand our world(s)?
Tim, I don't think I've seen you discuss or comment on the world of social networking sites like Facebook. Personally, I have resisted the call, literally, from many people. I have observed the medium second hand through family, and I just don't find interest in connecting that way with so many people simultaneously. Am I just anti-social, paranoid, or just wired differently then most because I don't really want to participate in that world? Of course, I don't expect you to be able to answer that specifically - but it is a question that seems to be bouncing in my head a bit.
