Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) helps dramatically reduce arterial calcification, implying it could help tremendously in preventing heart attacks. link

Given the recent love affair with "vitamin D" (Cholecalciferol) it's interesting to note that higher levels of calcitriol (formed from vitamin D) are associated with arterial calcification under certain conditions.

The claim made by some researchers that heart disease is caused by vit. D deficiency seems backwards. Low calcidiol seems to sometimes be the result of increased production of calcitriol. Calcidiol, also known as 25D, is formed directly from "vitamin D." Calcidiol is what doctors test for to determine "Vitamin D deficiency." Calcidiol is used by the body to produce 1,25D aka calcitriol, which is the active hormone. In such cases, vitamin D supplementation could exacerbate heart disease. (In a potential heart attack victim, inflammation -> increased TLR-4 -> increased CYP271B -> increased conversion of calcidiol to calcitriol)

Further, many blood thinners (salycilates in particular, such as aspirin, warfarin, or tumeric) which thin blood by interfering with Vitamin K1 seem to have the long term effect of increasing arterial calcification and heart disease, in direct contradiction to what we've been told.

Fortunately, K2 is not affected by salicylates,
but blocks their blood-thinning effect.
