Via the corner comes this rather sad video from Reason.TV, about Obama's move to kill the Washington DC voucher program despite evidence it works, reduced educational costs, and his own promise to support it if it was found to be effective. One mom complains:
Yet for those opposed to it, it has always been about politics. What other reason could their be for opposing something which delivers a much better product for a lower cost? (I presume this woman is having trouble coming to grips with the knowledge that Her Beloved Party has sold her kids out, so the fault becomes "politics" in general, which frames both parties as equally at fault.) Another woman and her daughter, who will be sent back to failing public schools, don't understand how Obama could have betrayed them:
This is so sad. I know what it means to be given a second chance by a private school: I was miserable and not doing very well in public schools until my parents scraped together what they could to send me to a private school for one year -- all we could afford. But even that single year made a vast difference. The sad irony is, had these women and many other good, caring mothers with children in failing schools instead supported John McCain, as much as they think they disliked him, they would still have their voucher program. They never seem to have heard nor understood that the national Democratic establishment is an ardent enemy of school choice. This development is no shock to me (Obama being a Democrat, I note) but they seem lost and perplexed, unable to process this completely foreseeable outcome. Thank you for your kind words, o anonymous one! It will be interesting to see who finds the blog again, given its absence for these several long months. Glad to be back! I had given up hoping - I never saw the notice about hosting problems that you posted on Jan 14, so for me, you simply disappeared from the 'sphere. I was afraid you had died, or something. I've missed your cogent thoughts - glad you're back, and vocal (and it's been so long, I can't remember the name I usually use for comments here) Posted by: Fiwit on May 20, 2009 05:29 PM Fiwit! Thanks for coming back to blogging! It really is good to "hear" your voice again! I hope this won't be a temporary return as you have always been one of my favorite reads.
